One-on-one
The most valuable meeting
What is a one-on-one?
A one-on-one is a weekly time for discussing deep topics which may have huge impacts on day-to-day work.
Why?
Some topics require a high-intensity discussion that may not fit into regular work meeting.
Some topics require a safe, private setting.
A one-on-one is for all these topics, and many more.
What do we do in a one-on-one?
- Voicing concerns. Regardless if it is a technical/architectural/team-work/project issue, this is a time for it.
- Providing feedback. The process is also two-way. You may receive feedback to guide your improvement. And you’re encouraged to give feedback, e.g. your ideas on improving your skills, or effectiveness of the team as a whole.
- Discussing longer term vision. Your career plan, or aspiration. They are suitable topics for one-on-one.
What should we AVOID in a one-on-one?
- Updating/reporting status. Instead, this should be done in writing.
